Hawzah News Agency- One halal specialty grocery store visited for this report is in Ueno, an area of Tokyo known for attracting many international visitors and foreign residents. The shop carries a wide variety of halal-certified ingredients, including meat, spices and packaged foods commonly used in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Southeast Asian cuisine.
During the visit, an interview was conducted with the store manager, who explained which products are most popular during Ramadan.
“There are many different kinds of dates available in the store'', the manager said. “During Ramadan, these are among the foods that sell the most because it is a Sunnah, a tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), to break the fast with dates. For that reason, dates become some of the best-selling products in our shop during Ramadan''.
Dates are traditionally eaten at iftar, and their demand increases significantly during the fasting month.
As the number of Muslim residents and visitors gradually grows in Japan, halal grocery stores such as this one are playing an increasingly important role in supporting diverse food cultures.
